James Major

James L. "Jim" Major, 64, New Creek, West Virginia, died Wednesday, April 11, 2012 at his residence.

Born on July 29, 1947 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he was a son of the late Joseph and Ada (Garland) Major. He was also preceded in death by his grandparents, Mary Major and Ella and Henry Garland; four sisters, Nancy Clinton, Rebecca Major, Antoinette Washington and Linda Dickerson; a uncle, James Garland; a nephew; Robert Smith; a cousin, Charles "Bubbie" Hines, Jr. and his mother-in-law, Betty Frances Shirley.

Jim retired as a journeyman in the maintenance department at the New Page Corporation with 38 years of service. He was a veteran of the United States Army and served in Germany. He was a member and past Commander of the Washington-Smith Post #152, American Legion, Keyser and was a member and past Master of Potomac Lodge #41, F & A.M., Keyser. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and belonged to the Route 50 Hunting Club. He enjoyed his summer camp on the South Branch River near Romney, West Virginia.

Surviving are his wife, Delores A. Major; two daughters, Misty A. Shirk-Brown and husband Jeffrey of Gore, Virginia and Kendra N. Major and Jordan S. McIntyre, New Creek; three stepdaughters, Natasha L. Clinton and husband Anthony, Keyser and Doris F. Combs and Rebecca S. Meek, both of New Creek.; eight grandchildren, Mark A. Combs and fiance Katie Gibson, Kapri L. Turner, Jalen M. Oates, Gregory A. Michael, Sarah K. Meek, Christopher E. Michael, Savannah F. Michael, Cooper A. Brown and soon to arrive, Landon J. Major; and a great-grandchild soon to arrive, Jaxon P. Combs. Also surviving are his brother, Joseph Major and special friend, Donna Williams of Belpry, Ohio; his aunts, Helen Hines of Piedmont, WV, Leon Garland of Keyser and Pearl Kager and husband Richard of Silver Spring, Maryland; his godchildren, Mistie Garland and Maleik Garland of Keyser and Alyssa Haggerty of Fort Hood, Texas; his father-in-law, Buradean Shirley and special friend, Dorothy Hose of Burlington, WV; his sisters and brother-in-law, Beverly and James Kifer of Old Fields, WV and Nancy Marshall of Moorefield, WV; very special friends, Leslie Miller of Piedmont and Darla "Louie" Amtower of New Creek; cousins, Langston Hines of Piedmont, Deonae Boyce and husband John of Columbus, OH; and his nieces and nephew, Alexis "Sissy" Dickerson and Sean Dickerson of Columbus, OH and Shania Washington of Piedmont.

Friends may were received at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser Chapel, on Saturday, April 14, 2012 from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m.

Funeral services were conducted at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser Chapel, on Sunday, April 15, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Darnell Allen officiating.

Interment was in the Potomac Memorial Gardens, Keyser.

During his long battle with cancer, Jim was cared for by Marsha Combs of the Potomac Valley Hospital Hospice. The family wishes to thank Marsha and the hospice program for their continued support and dedicated care.
